What the test is

A matrix test: the kind of puzzle used to measure reasoning without words or numbers.

  • 39 puzzles. Each is a grid of shapes with the last piece missing, and eight pieces to choose from.
  • They start easy and get harder as you go.
  • You have up to 40 minutes. The clock doesn’t stop, so take the test when you have the time free.
  • You can go back and change an answer until you hand the test in.
  • No reading, no sums and no general knowledge. Only shapes.

Your result is your IQ and your percentile. You also get a certificate with the same two numbers, your name, the date and a code anyone can look up.

How your score is worked out

Your answers are marked when you hand the test in. The number you got right is looked up in a norm table, which turns it into an IQ.

The table is set on the standard IQ scale: the average is 100 and the standard deviation is 15. The same scale gives your percentile, the share of people you scored higher than.

The table runs from below 79 to above 145. A score at either end is shown in those words.
